Wood fascinates me, particularly when it is filled with moisture from a freshly felled tree. The process of developing a pleasing functional or decorative piece begins with a study of the section of a large branch or trunk. How the wood grew begins to reveal its possibilities that are then further refined as the wood is processed into a turning blank for mounting on my lathe. The exploration and assessment of the wood continues as the growth rings and grain are revealed by my gouge. Only then does the wood tell me what it wants to be.
